Algerian computer hacker Hamza Bendelladj, wanted by the FBI on suspicion of stealing millions of dollars from US banks, was recently arrested in Bangkok, Thailand. US authorities has accused Bendelladj of hacking into private accounts in more than 217 banks and financial companies worldwide, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.
EU and US to share cybercrime data
The European Union and the US agreed to share more data on cross-border cybercriminals at the opening of a new high-tech unit, the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), aimed at helping police catch up with increasingly sophisticated criminals. EC3’s priority is to track online fraudsters, hackers and phishers.
Fraudster sentenced to prison for internet phishing scheme
Romanian Dragos Razvan Davidescu was recently sentenced to four years in prison for his role in an internet phishing scheme targeting banks customers. A member of a Romanian gang which shared files, tools, and information stolen via phishing attempts, Davidescu was found to have been involved in the scheme from 2004 to 2006, and held the personal bank data of more than 1,000 victims.
